Aretha Franklin Did Not Sing At Whitney Houston's Funeral Today
We're coming up on hour three of Whitney Houston's "Going Home" memorial and I don't know how my eyelids are still able to open after sitting through Kevin Costner talking for 35 million minutes about himself, himself, himself, himself, Jesus, himself, himself and how he himself put Whitney in The Bodyguard when nobody else wanted her in it. Oh, and he talked about himself and how Whitney is auditioning before God now (or something like that). The dozens of people taking a nap with their eyes open should've been the choir's cue to sing Kevin off the stage, because DAMN. Dances with Woofs was shorter than Kevin's speech.
Anyway, if Aretha Franklin was there, she would've knocked Kevin from the podium with her hip, but she pulled out from performing during Whitney's funeral. Aretha's leg muscles just wouldn't let her be great. Aretha gave this statement to People a couple of hours before Whitney's funeral today:
"Regretfully, I am so sorry that I was unable to be with you at Whitney's service today. I had every intention of being there. But unfortunately I had terrible leg spasms and locked leg muscles until 4:00 a.m. this morning following my concert last night, which I've been having for the last few days.I feel it necessary and very important to stay off my leg today as much as possible until concert time this evening. My heart goes out to my dear friend Cissy, Dionne, Bobbi Kristina and the rest of the family. May God keep them all. – Aretha & the Franklin Family."
If only Aretha knew there is a nurse at the funeral who would've soothed her leg spams as she hollered out some musical notes for Whitney. Seriously, there's an nurse usher in a white nurse's hat and everything handing out tissues to the people in the pews. There really should be a nurse in a 50s nurse's uniform at every funeral, because sometimes you really need a tissue from an authority figure in white.
UPDATE: Here's Kevin Costner's eulogy in its entirety. Okay, okay, the last part was a nice tribute.

Regardless of the content, I would like to congratulate both participants in the discussion that's taking place here for mastering the art of being articulate. In fact, the overall quality of the comments on Dlisted speaks volumes to me about the role language plays in the American education system. You couldn't find many Dutch - not even among the most highly educated - who could phrase their arguments equally well, not even at gunpoint.

Exactly. You believe in the living, loving God - the God of the New Testament.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, this is why I have trouble with the Bible and religion in general. Why was the old testament god all hateful and fire-throwing, and had people live in fear? And then suddenly, BOOM, he has his "moment of clarity" or so the new testament tells us, and suddenly he's this groovy, mellow new dude who just loves everybody and everybody just needs to chill. wtf? did he go to rehab or something? or did someone just tell an old story in a new way and make it sound all nice and not scary? Hello, this was done another time: it's called Grimm's Fairy Tales. Those original tales were some scary-ass shit, let me tell you-- NOT for children. But someone decided to sanitize them and make them palatable for the wee folk, and here we have a nice new shiny cottage industry to make money off of.
This is what I don't understand about religion. I was on a baptist church website the other day to see if they had a food bank that I could donate to, and it said, "we believe that the Bible is a story written over 1400 years by 66 different authors..." yada yada yada. WTF? And did you stop to think that maybe, MAYBE somewhere in there, SOMETHING GOT LOST IN THE TRANSLATION??? Also the bible was written in Aramaic, which is a dead language. So who translated it and how many times?
I don't mean to offend; I am just agnostic bc I don't understand all this. If someone wants to explain THEIR VIEW of it, please, explain away.
Off topic from Whitney .. but far as intolerance goes... when you have folks in my state legislator getting into my bedroom wanting to make abortion illegal (even in cases of rape or incest) .. we'll see where the intolerance really is. There's also the myth that Planned Parenthood is evil when in fact only about 3% of their services is abortion-related. It's all making something out of nothing. I've been able to ignore Christians for a while but when this sort of thing gets political and invades the very facility I use for medical exams (Planned Parenthood) and no one keeps religion to themselves .. well, we've got a problem then.
^^^^^^^^^
Re. Pre. Sent.
Speaking of religious intolerance, how about the Anoka-Hennepin school district in MICHELLE BACHMAN's home district, with their "no homo promo" policy of NOT discouraging bullying of gay teens, and NINE kids ended up committing suicide bc no one did anything to help them?
Yeah, religion, here's one of your finer moments. You Christians should be so proud!
OTOH, I'm an agnostic bc I think all the angels/god/heaven thing is a bit of hooey to make people feel better about themselves. That being said, whatever makes you feel better. Whitney was a flawed human being, who sometimes chose the right road and sometimes chose the wrong one. Shit, e've all done it. Why are we getting so sanctimonious here? She died, some are sad, we'll get over it. End of story.
I was surfing the tv yesterday when I stumbled upon the funeral... right when Kevin Costner started his eulogy. I thought he did an awesome job. Alicia Keyes on the other hand WHOA MOMMA... she sounded like two cats fucking in a blender.
Poor, poor Whitney.
On a more vulgar note, I must say it was an awkward period of time when women wore those sorts of pants like the one's Aretha has on. It created this sort of...hexagonal shape around the crotch area that jutted out atcha.
It was almost as though women were saying "That ain't my belly, I just have a really fat kooch"
To some degree, I can agree with this.
However, for those whose lives are deeply touched by music, or are big WH fans they feel some kind of 'bond' to her. That she spoke to them directly.
I'm a James Dean fanatic and his story constantly breaks my heart. Of course, the dude died 57 years ago but doesn't mean we cannot relate to him in some way.
Yeah, she fucked up her life in the end with drugs and booze, but she was someone's mother and daughter.
You goober. I didn't say it proves there is a God. Yeesh. Atheists don't believe in God and that would include the teachings and stories of the bible. But they still quote from it whether they realize it or not. :-) Don't forget, no one claims God wrote the New Testament. That was written mostly by Paul, who was very much a real person.
that is because some of the stuff told in the bible, like love thy neighbor and be good ot others is common fucking sense. Dont kill is common sense. I didnt need the bible to tell me that. Plus I dont know who these atheists are that quote the bible all the time in their personal lives. I never quote the bible in everyday life regarding anything. I know what it says but i dont recite scripture. Plus what does it have to do with anything anyway or how does that prove your point? Jesus...(oops)
I'm Catholic - Catholic School my entire life - and I have no problem saying that I DO NOT believe that fear and God go hand in hand. I believe in an all loving, forgiving God. I certainly think we create our own hell and probably will in our afterlife as well ( based on our thoughts in this lifetime). I also believe in reincarnation - which the catholic faith frowns upon. There are many times I question my faith -- but not my faith in God.
Exactly. You believe in the living, loving God - the God of the New Testament. He doesn't want us to fear Him in the way we think of fear. All He asks from us is obedience. If we have a hell here on earth it's because we went outside His will and made our own choices rather than the ones He wants us to make. That's the most powerful thing God gave us - free will. He can steer us in the right direction but in the end, He cannot and will not override our free will. And sure, I think most people do question their faith from time to time but not their faith in God. HUGE difference.
@ Dog,
how am i making dangerous generalization? What would be the correct approach in your balanced opinion? Sit there and watch public policy be dictated by religious belief? would that make me a more approachable person with less dangerous ideas? Like sure, its ok you think a gelatinuous mass kept in a freezer is a baby. We dont need to find a cure for cancer or Alzheimer. Would respecting that make me a sweetie pie? A less of a danger to society? Is there a balanced view on notions like a man walked on water and parted the seas or resurrected from the dead? Do you realize that if someone came to you and told you that kind of crap outside the context of religion, you would refer them to the mental hospital? But I guess the polite thing to do would be to nod and say yes, you are right.
People like you are the reason we still have to put up with religion and also why there really is no separation of church and state, and why they wanna teahc intelligent design and have in god we trsut printed on the paper and why in 2012 we still need to have some white male asshole sitting in the white house make decisions pertaining to a woman's crotch and uterus.
let me also ask you (and i am not really asking you because i know the answer): would you or anyone respect someone woh said they are a member of the KKK and that this is their belief after all? So what makes you think I should respect religious people? How are they different than your run of the mill bigot? And what about the feelings of atheists? Just last week the pious RELIGIOUS people you hold the torch for were pissing and moaning that atheists were gonna put up signs on billboards in Dallas. So they want the right to freedom of religion and free speech, but god forbid an atheist wants the same. We cant have that...we have to be mindful around religious people but we cant expect the same thing as non believers.
Anyway looks to me like your beef with me is more personal than on the subject. You just get really sore with the way I talk and it provoked you in some way. But that is really irrelevant and ad hominem attacks wont get you far in a debate or strengthen your position.
The thing about atheists is they don't realize just how many expressions we use every day that are directly from the bible if not the exact quote. If someone describes something as being "manna from heaven", that's from Exodus. Manna means "what is it" in Aramaic. Atheists say "Oh my God". Eh? They don't believe in God but they use that expression? How about "Oh God" when in bed while sexing it up. Same thing.
you are making a false analogy here. Those people didnt kill millions because atheism told them so or because there was something in atheism, like a doctrine or agenda, that sort of allowed them to justify killing others. They were dictators who killed for power and money and not in the name of atheism. But religious people HAVE sacrificed millions of others because of their faith, because of doctrine. Crusades anyone? Religious wars all over? Manifest destiny? Justification for colonialism. Hello.
Atheism is also not a religion. It is the absence of religion. It simply means that one does not believe in god any more than in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.
@ Dog,
I dont give a fuck what your mommy would do. There are two kinds of evil in this world - doing bad things and watching others do bad things and not doing anything about it, which does not need to be violent. I am not going to sit here and give credence to the insanity of religious people just so ignorant tools like you or maybe even your mommy approve of me. You dont like what I have to say, tough.
I also didnt say anything about wanting religious people to die; that is what you are projecting onto me. I said that their faith has very dire and detrimental consequences on society. Just look around you. If the debates of just the past 3 weeks arent enough to convince or your mother for that matter, then there is a problem up there I cant solve for you. I dont have tolerance or understanding for peoples' beliefs when those beliefs adversely affect society. If they didnt, I wouldnt care, but they do and I stand up to it and os should anyone really who cares about the fate of human kind. we arent going to solve our problems as long as religion dictates everything. That is a fact.
Personally, I am a pacifist woh believes that our problems cannot be solved with war fare and blood shed but only through cooperation and diplomacy. I dont want anyone who is religious to die or be shot, I want them to just get the fuck out of everyone else's life and keep their faith within their 4 walls. I am not going to sit there and politely nod out of some false, deluded sense of tact towards entities who have fucked up everyone's life. And if you are coming here to just troll rest assured you will be ignored.
*Don't kill
*Don't steal
*Don't fuck someone else's spouse
*Honor your mom and dad * show respect
*Don't be jealous of your neighbors
*Believe in something greater than yourself instead of being a narcissistic fuck
*Take a day off once a week to be grateful for the things you have and cherish the moment with them
*Love your neighbor as you do yourself ( there's a concept)
Doesnt seem so far fetched to me.
There wasn't time to notify people. Whitney died in the late afternoon, and by the time the news got out, some people were already in their cars on their way to the Clive Davis event.
But it wasn't a party--people were very somber and in shock, and glad to have a place to assemble with friends while the news sank in. Some attendees said they were grateful to have that time and place to share and comfort others.
Um, I dont really know if commandments are in ALL bibles, because I dont presume to know what other religions are about. Other than that, I worry about my own faith not every one else's.
Well, for ME... I think that life is really amazing as it is. Maybe I'm just a goober, lol, but I don't really wanna believe in a god. That's not because I think I know everything. I love to learn. Just for me, the more I learned, the less I turned to a god. Or rather, saw myself being less interested in god as an explanation for things.
George Carlin:
"Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there is an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of 10 things he DOES NOT WANT YOU TO DO! And if you do any of these 10 things, he has a special place full of fire, smoke, and burning and torture and anguish where he will send YOU to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever till the end of time. But he LOVES you
**************
NOT everyone believes in the Catholic faith (he is referring to the 10 commandments). But there are plenty of different religions that believe there is something greater than us mere humans. Some of us would like to believe that there is something more powerful, more loving, more forgiving, and more miraculous than our self centered-selves !
George Carlin makes a point. But which faith doesnt get poked at by atheists? please.
