tomato puff - sorry about the late post. I will not pretend to be an expert on the Middle East but there are some things I'm aware of regarding that area of the globe.

1. The Romans conquered that region and called the people who lived there "Palestinians" and those people were the Jews.

2. The Jewish people were slaughtered, displaced, or forced to convert when Muhammad made his little run through their homeland although many of them remained or returned at a later time. The Jews who settled in Arab or Persian territories were constantly displaced and used as scapegoats by rulers who would behead a person for waking them up too early in the morning. They were treated the same way in Russia and, of course, Europe.

3. The area that is now Israel became a sparsely populated, far-flung part of the Ottoman Empire. When that empire disintegrated during WW1, and as there was a Zionist movement for a country the Jews could call their own, Woodrow Wilson founded a Jewish settlement of sorts through his League of Nations that operated under British control. The area now known as Jordan tried to claim it as theirs but withdrew that claim after WW2. The Jewish people began building a thriving society on that rock and this drew many Arab people from the surrounding areas who were looking for work and an escape from tyrannical rule.

4. When the boundaries of the various Middle Eastern countries were established after WW2, Israel was officially recognized as a SECULAR country. Great Britain washed her hands of that entire part of the globe and that fucked up a lot of people, including the Afghans. I don't know why England did this. I suppose the Brits were just sick of war and didn't want to lose anymore men. They were probably in debt, too. Maybe they had their own little liberals screeching out against imperialism like we have in the U.S. today. Whatever, many Middle Easterners were hurt by that decision. As far as Arab displacement goes, I'm sure there were Arabs who were pushed out by regular citizens, or were angry or scared and left on their own, but there was never any official, government program to remove them and there was certainly no genocide. I believe at one point during a time of much treason many were asked to sign something that showed allegiance to Israel. If they didn't sign, they couldn't vote.

5. I know that Israel kicked ass when attacked by much larger nations who, despite sharing the same language, customs, and religion with the "Palestinians", refused to take in any refugees. I know that Hamas and Hezbollah start things while hiding behind the people they say they are fighting for and proceed to get spanked every time they do this and then they are the "victims". I know that when a Palestinian or any Arab from those much bigger nations is asked about this situation they speak of their "humiliation" and when an Israeli is asked the same thing s/he speaks of survival.

Btw, I was going through some recipe magazines the other day and in a 2009 Saveur there was an article on the food in Jerusalem. This little shop belongs to a Jewish man, that little cafe belongs to an Arab man, and over there is a restaurant with 2 owners, 1 Jewish and 1 Arab! Not one word about the war, not one mention of a Palestinian. They were all Israelis.

We are in Afghanistan to control the drug trade. That's the reason we were helping them with the Soviet invasion which was also about the drug trade. The reason they are "barely a country" is...the drug trade! Yes, the War on Drugs really takes on multiple meanings.

In fact, the Palestinians enjoyed far more rights as citizens of Israel than they had previously and the Palestinian leadership of today is nothing but the same old despots of yore. Furthermore, there is absolutely no Arab or Muslim country that gives a hoot about the plight of the Palestinian people. They don't give or help in any way. They simply propagandize hatred for Israel and the U.S. to their own citizens in order to retain power through distraction from their own failed dynasties. These countries are actually far more concerned about Iran.

Communism and socialism are systems of political beliefs that have been around for centuries. They have specific characteristics and easily identifiable belief systems, if one has received an education which analytically compares various political beliefs. Its not like 'asshole' or 'moron' which is name calling, but rather objective characteristics which can be identified.

Bunny, my own belief is that america ought to stop its overseas meddling and wars. Yet your comments indicate to me that some of what you believe has been spoon fed to you by the mainstream media and government, while those who see nuance are ignorant in your mind if the nuance conflicts with your received beliefs. Cast your net a bit wider and read some libertarian thinking if you want to see more clearly what americans are spoon fed.

I think that much of the hatred and apologist behavior towards America from Americans is being taught by college professors all across America. I have seen it personally with my children relaying what happens in the classroom and read many accounts that colleges are now the primary tool of communist and socialist teachings in our country. My own comments are not on low education rate, but rather low educational achievement. American mainstream education teaches a lite marxist pablum, followership, unquestioning deference to the media and government, and lack of critical thinking.

For instance, how many americans feel we should end an overseas war if the government says its necessary for our national defense? If a presidential candidate says the war should be ended, but once elected does nothing to end it?

So why be a foreign exchange student? Well, its fun, its a chance to have fun in a great country, and employment prospects and standard of living are higher than in many countries. And a chance to have sex with those promiscuous american co-eds without one's family in the old country knowing. Academic excellence may also be a factor, but by no means the only one.

vsmini, the "ZOMG stooopid Americans aren't bilingual" argument is tiresome and frankly, silly. Why was he so shocked that most Americans can't speak French or Italian? Spanish I could see, but the other two?

Most Americans, living in an enormous English speaking country with an enormous English speaking country on its northern border, have no NEED to learn another language. This country isn't like Europe, where states share borders with six other states that speak different languages so learning multiple languages is a necessity; if NJ, NY, and CT spoke French Spanish and German, respectively, you can bet the residents of the tri-state area would all be trilingual. But there's no immediate necessity for Joe Sixpack from Arkansas to learn another language, and so he only speaks English. This is the reality of his circumstances.

I think education in a second language should be required in all U.S. schools and English may not always be the lingua franca of the US and the world, but right now, it is. Them's the facts. Castigating Americans for not knowing another language is obnoxious and elitist.

Newsflash! America does things that piss other countries off. We're not perfect, people. We do some really awful things to other countries.

That doesn't mean I don't love my country. I love it like I love my mom. She isn't perfect but she's mine.

One of the great things about the US is the protection of freedom of speech. This guy expressed his anger. I remember when those two 13 year old Korean girls were murdered by two American military members. It was awful. However, what this man "rapped" was pretty awful, too. It was a long time ago, though. Maybe he's grown up some since then.

I think that much of the hatred and apologist behavior towards America from Americans is being taught by college professors all across America. I have seen it personally with my children relaying what happens in the classroom and read many accounts that colleges are now the primary tool of communist and socialist teachings in our country. Most professors are rabid socialists and hate America.

It's interesting the people commenting on the extremely low-education rate of America, when a lot of foreign exchange students chose to get their education over here. Even Psy's fat So.Korean ass studied here. It's not because we're cheaper either, bitches.

Also, heres a little either unknown or known fact for most of you. When they do stastics in regards to where countries lie on the educational scale, unlike most countries, America count all its citizens, even the slower/special educational ones. Other countries DO NOT. So they aren't actually "showing" how much more superior they are to us on an intellectual scale; they're just keeping their secret shames in the basement to make it seem that way.

Both of my parents were in the military. It sickens me that what this country is today is what they fought for. Like them, I used to be one of those knee-jerk "'MURRICA!!" patriots. But I have a job that has me out of the country 4-6 months out of the year, and I've got a broader worldview now. America is not some shiny, happy land of opportunity like everyone would like to sugar-coatedly believe. It's a fucked up place. I'm thankful for the many fortunate things that we do have, but generally disgusted with the masses and their reprehensible behavior. I too can't wait to move the fuck away for good.
